Mezcal Oro de Oaxaca is a Mexican Mezcal , named after the larva (Gusano de Mezcal) the skipper butterfly, which likes to attack agave leaves. Oro de Oaxaca is made from 100% agave and comes from the Mexican state of Oaxaca .
In every bottle of Oro de Oaxaca there is... no, not a worm, but actually a caterpillar of the "Megathymus" species. According to legend, in ancient times this was used to ensure quality. If the mezcal was good, it preserved the caterpillar. If the quality was poor, the caterpillar would disintegrate. Nowadays, of course, this is no longer necessary, but the caterpillar remained as a marketing gimmick. Traditionally, the person who takes the last sip from the bottle is allowed (or must?) to consume it.
